Apprentices at the Hochfilzen plant engage in a dialogue with Federal Minister Pröll
The Federal Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management Josef Pröll visited the RHI raw materials and production plant in Hochfilzen. The highlights of the visit included a tour of the plant with RHI CEO Andreas Meier and a lively discussion with the plant’s apprentices.
Federal Minister Josef Pröll talked to CEO Meier and representatives of the staff about the specific characteristics of the international refractories market as well as the specialised services performed by the employees at the plant in Hochfilzen. RHI is one of the few international corporate groups from Austria and is the definitive world market leader in the refractories sector. “Despite its role as an international market leader, RHI does not overlook the environment. The fact that the company invested € 46 million in environmental protection measures between 1990 and 2006 alone is highly respectable,” said Federal Minister Pröll. RHI CEO Meier added, “As a result of our efforts, our carbon dioxide emissions were reduced by 26 per cent, allowing us to set a benchmark in environmental protection.”
One important aspect of the visit was the dialogue between Federal Minister Pröll and the apprentices at the plant in Hochfilzen. The apprentices gave Mr Pröll some insights into their training and took advantage of the opportunity to ask the minister questions in a relaxed environment. One of the questions the apprentices asked was what kind of education is required to work in the ministry.
The training of apprentices is particularly important to RHI. Starting in their first year of training, apprentices receive specialised training in order to foster expert knowledge, personal development, methodological skills and competence in terms of safety and health. “This training programme has already received numerous awards. We recently celebrated the fact that we received the 2008 Trigos Award with all of our employees,” said RHI CEO Meier.

The RHI plant in Hochfilzen celebrated its 50th anniversary last year and also achieved record-breaking results. In addition to manufacturing refractory products, RHI also operates its own magnesite and dolomite mine in Hochfilzen.
